Starting June 23, 2014, ABC Disposal will collect solid waste and recycling only in specially designed wheeled carts. More than 55,000 carts have been distributed so far with many more to go. If residents have not received the carts, please call the City of New Bedford's Department of Facilities and Fleet Management at (508) 961-3008.

The switch over to the new automated system will offer environmental benefits in keeping the landfill for a much longer time and helping make the city look cleaner. Please don't set out old garbage cans or bags of trash. By separating garbage from loose recyclables, including materials such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans, plastic drink containers, aerosol containers and milk containers. Styrofoam and plastic bags should never be placed in the recycling carts.

For bulky items like mattresses, couches or refrigerators, etc., call ABC Disposal at (508) 999-2619. These items will no longer be collected curbside without an appointment. Ken Blanchard, Director of the Department of Facilities and Fleet Management and Marissa Perez-Dormitzer, District Recycling Coordinator for the Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District, joined Phil Paleologos on Midday Magazine the day after launching the program and took phone call questions and comments from WBSM listeners.
