Notable Southcoast community members are gathering at the Carney Academy school in New Bedford tomorrow morning to get children excited about reading. More than thirty people are volunteering their time to read to third, fourth, and fifth graders as part of the 22nd annual Salute to Reading is FUNdamental "Read Aloud" program in New Bedford.

Creator and chairperson Joanne Byron tells WBSM News the children can be highly influenced by the volunteers.

Mayor Jon Mitchell is scheduled to read, along with four former mayors, District Attorney Sam Sutter, State Representative Keiko Orrall and many other officials.

WBSM's Phil Paleologos, Jim Phillips, and Taylor Cormier will also be reading to the children of Carney Academy starting Tuesday at 10:30am.
