WAREHAM — A third case of rabies in Wareham has been confirmed.

On Thursday, September 6, Wareham Department of Natural Resources responded to a home in the area of Anthony Way for a report of an aggressive woodchuck in a resident's yard.

The animal was captured by WDNR and taken to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health - Rabies Laboratory for testing. On Friday, the laboratory confirmed the woodchuck tested positive for rabies. The animal was destroyed.

The latest case of a rabid animal marks the third in the town of Wareham this year. On August 28, a rabid bat was captured in a yard near Crooked River Road. On September 2, another rabid bat flew into a resident's home. Both animals were captured and destroyed after they tested positive for rabies.

Wareham Department of Natural Resources urges residents to ensure their pets are up to date with their rabies vaccinations in order to prevent the spread of the disease.
