Questions About Road Safety in Mattapoisett Prompt Road Closure

Mattapoisett's Town Administrator has closed a stretch of Acushnet Road in the town due to safety concerns.

According to the Standard Times, Town Administrator Michael Gagne closed Acushnet Road at Tinkham Pond after a problem with the road's subsurface was noticed about a week ago.

The deteriorating subsurface was viewed by a bridge engineer and MassHighway, and a decision was made to close the road after there were questions about whether it could support the weight of the traffic that travels over it.

Two temporary fixes include installing plating over the road, or installing a temporary bridge structure.

Gagne could not give an estimate on when the road will be reopened. He will have more information about the road and possible solutions Friday.
