The school year has begun in Providence and several other Rhode Island districts.

Mayor Angel Taveras and Superintendent Susan Lusi planned to greet students and parents arriving at Leviton Dual Language Elementary School on Wednesday morning.

Lusi will also visit Fortes Elementary, Lima Elementary, Stuart Middle, Dr. Jorge Alvarez High and other schools. She plans to visit all 40 public schools in the district in the first few weeks of the new year.

Wednesday is also the first day of school in Bristol-Warren, Burrillville, Central Falls, Coventry, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Exeter-West Greenwich, Lincoln, Narragansett, Warwick and Woonsocket.

Two dozen of the state's school districts are now open.

Some districts are not opening until after Labor Day.
