President Obama says equal pay for equal work should be a fundamental principle of the American economy.

Marking Equal Pay Day, Obama said an ongoing wage gap in the U.S. must be closed. He noted that the gap is even wider for women of color.  The President again called on Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Obama marked Equal Pay Day by dedicating a monument to women's equality on Capitol Hill.

The Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument is an historic house that has been the National Woman's Party headquarters since 1929. The President called it a "hotbed of activism for women's equality." The house was named for suffragist Alva Belmont. (Metro Networks Inc.)
