Prescription drop-off boxes, which accept expired or unused medications, are now available in all 20 police departments in Bristol County.

Officials tell ABC6 that the program involved six months of planning.

During a press conference in Fall River on Tuesday, District Attorney Thomas Quinn says these drop off boxes will do a great deal to prevent these drugs from falling into the wrong hands.

"The Percocets that potentially could [lead to addiction] are going to be destroyed, not left there for years in the medicine cabinet," said Quinn.

Quinn also called the drop off boxes a positive step in addressing the opioid epidemic.

"We're trying to deal with pragmatic impact things that hopefully can jar people and help stem this tide [of abuse]," said Quinn.

Officials say they have collected hundreds of pounds of medications which can be placed in the bins with no questions asked.

Nic Charest, of SSTAR Addiction Treatment welcomed the announced but said officials need to ensure that focus is placed on treatment for those suffering from drug addiction.

“Arresting certainly isn’t the answer,” said Charest “I don't think anybody wants to be suffering from this awful disease but without access to treatment, it's more and more difficult to put that out of your life."
