Power Scholars celebrate their summer of achievements with an End of Summer Celebration.

YMCA Southcoast's Power Scholar Academy wrapped up their 2018 summer Scholar Academy with a showcase of their hard work, a musical performance and achievement ceremony.

The program brought in a Latin musician, Alex Torres, from New York to teach the kids about different musical instruments and perform for them. Some of the students were able to go up on stage and perform with the musicians themselves. Annmarie Sawyer, Director of Educational Achievement for the YMCA said that they "wanted to tie in education right until the end." They did not disappoint.

One of the students we interviewed about his experience as a Power Scholar is Valter Fernandes. His mother, Maria Cabral said that at first he didn't want to go 'for the whole summer,' but then he loved it. The program was five weeks long, but many students didn't want it to end.

This program, only in its second year, was a huge success. And it's only going to get better from here. It was clear to see after speaking with the scholars that this may very well be the highlight of their summer and an experience they will never forget. It not only engaged them in reading and STEM, but enrichment programs allowed them to explore other forms of education and ways to express themselves.

Can't wait to see what next year has in store!
