Two New Bedford men have been arrested on drug charges.

According to the Standard Times, 32-year-old Travis Mendes of Summit Street and 24-year-old Ryan Blithe of Brook Street were taken into custody just after 2am Wednesday morning after police noticed a group of men including Blithe and Mendes outside the Cumberland Farms at Rockdale Avenue and Kempton Street.

Police investigated in order to prevent a possible robbery. Mendes immediately took off on foot but was soon caught. In his backpack, police found a BB gun, mace, an unidentified prescription pill, and heroin.

Police also searched Blithe's backpack, finding prescription amoxicillin not made out in his name.

Mendes faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and various drug charges. Blithe was charged with possessing heroin.
