New Bedford High School has reopened its pool after more than $500,000 worth of repairs and renovations.

At a news conference on Thursday, Mayor Jon Mitchell recalled visiting the pool area with then-Superintendent Mike Shea some three years ago.

"it was very steamy and things were run-down, the tiles in the pool were falling off, and it was in a real state of disrepair and had been neglected for a long time," said the Mayor.

Mitchell said the filtration room was even worse. The Mayor said it looked like a scene from the movie "The Poseidon Adventure," but thanks to the expertise of Chief Financial Officer Ari Sky, the money was found to make the repairs.

They included an automated water treatment mechanism, new tiles and updated locker rooms.

Senior Tyler Brierley, a Captain of the swim team, is happy with the new facility. "it's great for practice and its going to be a great and fun year, I'm just glad to be home."

The New Bedford High School Swim Team was forced to hold swim meets at UMass Dartmouth and elsewhere while the repairs were ongoing.
