WEYMOUTH — A police officer in Weymouth is in critical condition from being shot several times.

Authorities say an on duty officer in Weymouth was shot Sunday morning and describe the officer's injuries as "life-threatening. The unidentified officer is being treated at South Shore Hospital.

State police detectives and prosecutors from the Norfolk District Attorney's Office say a shooting suspect has since been taken into custody.

Witnesses say the suspect had been driving erratically as officers tried to pull him over and then crashed into another car, fled on foot, and then shot the officer. Several bullets hit a nearby home.

Several officers are at the scene at Burton Terrace where the shooting took place.
