Two New Bedford women were arrested after Acushnet Police say they left a two-year-old child in a running car during a Sunday night break-in.

Det. Sgt. Thomas Carreau tells the Standard Times the girl's mother, identified as 25-year-old Christine Ferreira and the girl's aunt, identified as 27-year-old Stephanie Ferreira left the girl in the car while they broke into a Randall St. home around 9:30 p.m.

A neighbor reported the break-in after saying they heard breaking glass and knew the owners weren't home.

Officers arrived on scene where they found a broken rear door and saw flashlights inside the home.

A perimeter was set up around the house and one of the suspects was seen exiting a second-floor window to get access to the roof and the officers then ordered the suspects out of the house.

The suspects complied and were arrested and charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property, larceny under $250 and child endangerment

Carreau says the child was removed from her mother's black 2003 Honda Accord and the car seat was transferred and secured inside a police cruiser.

The child is reported to be fine and was transferred to the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
