New Bedford Police say four men will be charged in connection with an attempted robbery Monday night at Conduit and Harwich streets.

Det. Capt. Steve Vicente says the 22 year old male victim thought he had a deal to sell four pairs of sneakers for one thousand dollars.

As he waited in his car for the buyer, a car pulled up with four men inside.  One of the men emerged and demanded the victim hand over the sneakers.  When the victim refused, the man pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, and the victim drove off, striking a parked car in the process.

An off duty police officer investigated the commotion, and followed the suspects vehicle to Tarklin Hill Road, where the suspects fled the area on foot.

The alleged driver of the car, Matthew Alves, was caught on Humphrie Street by a State Trooper who heard the call.

Police also found a pellet gun in some bushes where the suspects ran from the car.

Matthew Alves was charged with armed assault with intent to rob.  Capt. Vicente says Police know the identities of the other suspects, and they will be charged as well.
