Police in Massachusetts say an officer responding to an emergency call ran over and apparently killed a man lying in a road.

Police in Chatham, a town on Cape Cod, say it happened at about 4 a.m. Thursday. The victim was identified as 22-year-old Garrett Gagne, of Longmeadow. He was pronounced dead at Cape Cod Hospital.

The officer has not been identified.

Police say they don't know why Gagne was lying in the road or what his condition was before the accident. They say he was in Chatham to celebrate New Year's Eve with friends.

State and local police are investigating.
