A New Bedford police officer entered a burning building early Tuesday and led a man to safety.  According to Det. Capt Steve Vicente, police and fire units responded to 28 Cleveland Street in the South End around 1am, and reported the third floor porch was engulfed in flames with heavy smoke.

Five occupants including three small children were outside, but officer Jonathon Pavao was told a 53 year old man was still inside, trying to put the fire out.  Pavao entered the house and made his way thru a smoke filled hallway, locating the man and guiding him to safety.  Capt.  Vicente says a total of seven people were taken to St. Lukes Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
