New Bedford Police are investigating after a man was shot Sunday night.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente say officers were sent to the 100 Block of Pleasant St. after a neighbor reported hearing gunshots inside a third floor apartment.

Officers arrived on scene and followed a blood trail up to the apartment and received no answer after knocking.

Vicente says officers forced their way in to the apartment and found more blood and shell casings but no one was found inside.

Police later received a call from Tobey Hospital security in Wareham saying they were were treating a man who claimed he was shot in New Bedford.

The victim, identified only as a 29-year-old man with addresses in Wareham and Boston, was later transported to Rhode Island Hospital with non life threatening injuries after suffering a gunshot wound that went through his right leg and into his left leg and a second gunshot wound to the left hand.

Vicente says the man gave conflicting statements regarding the incidents to both hospital staff and detectives.
