Police say preliminary autopsy results show that some of the dozens of animals found buried on a Massachusetts farm last month were starved to death.

Authorities found more than 1,000 animals in total at the 70-acre Westport property in July. Many of them were dead or injured.

Det. Jeff Majewski tells The Standard-Times investigators found 20 possible burial sites and found remains at about seven of them. He says multiple dead animals were found in those locations.

Dr. Jason Byrd, a forensic scientist with the University of Florida, is studying the remains. He declined to comment on what remains were found.

Officers also found makeshift cabins, burning trash and illegal stoves at the property last month.

Police have said about two dozen people may face charges.
