The extreme cold that's wrapped itself around Southeastern Massachusetts has forced the cancellation of Polar Plunge events in Fairhaven and Fall River.

Organizers of the Fort Phoenix Polar Plunge in Fairhaven decided to postpone the New Year's Day event because of the extreme cold that's forecast for Sunday night and Monday.

According to the event's Facebook page, they did so out of concern for their volunteers and participants well being.  They say the swim will be rescheduled for a later, and warmer day.

The event is held in honor of domestic violence victims on the Southcoast, and  raises money by selling tee-shirts, and donating the funds to the Dollars for Scholars program in Fairhaven.

Also cancelled for Monday is the Polar Plunge event in Fall River that raises money for the Forever Paws Animal Shelter.
