The "Paul Revere sign" visible from Interstate 195 in New Bedford continues to decay.

It was announced over a year ago the sign would be taken down and moved into storage until funding was available to restore it.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Mayor Jon Mitchell says removing the sign has proven to be a more difficult task than originally thought.

Mitchell says the base of the sign will have to be rebuilt in order for crews to remove the sign safely. The mayor expects the removal to be completed by the end of the summer.

Mitchell says the restoration may cost upwards of $250,000.
