State Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester is now reviewing a long list of recommendations on ways to improve student acheivement at the Parker School in New Bedford.

A local stakeholers group, which included Supt. Dr. Pia Durkin, came up with the recommendations over a two month period, after the Parker School was designated a chronically underperforming or level five school.

The recommendations include retaining principal Debra Letendre, developing programs to engage parents, and lining up community organizations to help students learn.

The group also recommends builidng a playground at the Parker School.  Presently the County Street school has a paved lot and not much else for outdoor activity.

Commissioner Chester now has 30 days to produce a turnaround plan for the Parker School.
