Nearly three dozen New Bedford Public School teachers have resigned during the month of August.

Monday night's School Committee meeting revealed that 31 teachers have left to teach in other districts.

Superintendent Pia Durkin's main concern with the departures is the way her office is being notified. She says its normal protocol for the districts that hire teachers away from other districts to notify that district.....

Many of these teachers have left for non-urban districts and the city realizes it can't compete with these districts.

Another cause for teachers to leave so late in the summer is many other districts are currently recruiting due to later budget approvals.

Some Committee members expressed concern for so many teachers to be leaving so close to the start of the new school year, but the Committee  was assured these departures won't have a negative impact on students.
