How do you punish a moron who leaves his infant daughter alone in a hot car while he shops? His family has refused to bail him out, to give him time to think about what he has done.

The moron in question is 24-year-old Gene Curry, who left the child, wrapped in a blanket, in the car with the windows rolled up while he ran into a supermarket in Baytown, Texas for at least 20 minutes. KHOU-TV reports that firefighters who rescued the child say the temperature inside the car had reached 112 degrees by the time they arrived.

Curry’s grandmother, Christina Hayes, told ABC13 Houston that her grandson loved his kids, but there was “no excuse for what happened.”

"I don't think he'll ever forgive himself, and we're not bailing him out, because we think this is the lesson he needs," she told the station.

Curry has been charged with child endangerment. The child is said to be fine and is in the custody of family members.

These types of things happen all too often, even here in New Bedford.

It takes a special kind of stupid to leave a kid alone in a car to begin with. But, when you wrap that kid in a blanket and leave it locked in a car in the Texas heat...well, that's beyond description.

Curry should lose all contact with that child until he can prove that he is responsible enough, and worthy enough, to provide it with the proper care it deserves.
