NEW BEDFORD - A house fire in New Bedford's North End causes heavy damage and leaves one woman hospitalized.

The New Bedford Fire Department responded to the home at 146 Maryland street around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday with four engines and two ladders.

The fire was discovered by the owner's son, who lives next door. The son went into the home before the fire department arrived, and found his mother on the bathroom floor of the single-family home. She was transported to St. Luke's Hospital for undisclosed injuries.

A cat was also safely removed from the home.

The fire was completely extinguished in about 45 minutes.

The fire is under investigation.
