Gov. Charlie Baker describes the selection of Boston as the U.S. bidder for the 2024 Olympics as an ``opportunity'' for the city and the region as a whole.

The Republican began his first full day in office on Friday by participating in a news conference on the Olympic bid with representatives of the United States Olympic Committee, Mayor Martin Walsh and officials of Boston 2024 organization.

The mayor and governor pledged a transparent process going forward.

Baker later convened his first cabinet meeting as governor. He told reporters after the meeting that topics discussed included the Olympics and early priorities of his administration, among them a state budget deficit that he believes exceeds $500 million.

The governor also planned visits to the central part of the state Friday and western Massachusetts on Saturday.
