A vital improvement is being celebrated at a New Bedford library.

Installation of an elevator at the Casa Da Saudade Library has been completed, and acting Library Director Jeff Dickinson tells WBSM News it was a much-needed component to provide access to the entire building.

Elevators aren't cheap, either. The installation was funded by a $500,000 state grant, and an additional $150,000 from the city.

The now operational elevator brings the building into compliance with the American Disabilities Act.

The historic building on Crapo Street also houses the Immigrants' Assistance Center and the Escola Oficial Porgtuguesa, an organization teaching Portuguese language and culture to children.

Officials are now working on planning for a complete overhaul of the third floor of the library, which remains unfinished.
