The "Octopus" intersection Downtown at Route Six no longer has its pedestrian overpass.  The structure was taken down Sunday night, as part of an improvement project for that intersection.

D-P-I chief Ron Labelle says the overpass was lifted off its abutments to the street below, then cut in half.  It eventually will be sold for scrap.  Labelle tells WBSM News, the span was unsafe, and the decision was made earlier this year to take it down.

Labelle says many motorists Monday probably said to themselves, "something looks different here, and it does look different."

Labelle says improvements to the Octopus intersection will inlclude new lighting and shorter crossing-areas and will be completed this construction season.
