Ocean Explorium Loses UMass Dartmouth Funding

The Ocean Explorium in Downtown New Bedford is losing the support of UMass Dartmouth. 

Explorium Director Abbey Spargo says she received a call this week from Chancellor Dvina Grossman, saying the University was withdrawing financial support from the Explorium, because it needed to reduce spending in order to balance the University budget. 

Spargo says the Explorium will lose about $300,000, or about one-third of its budget......

Spargo says the partnership with UMass Dartmouth lasted five years. 

Spargo says it will be her job to seek out more grant money and energize the membership and sponsors to help raise cash and keep the Explorium's education programs going.
