Water was shut off for many North End residents after a pipe burst Tuesday night at the corner of Holly Street and Ashley Boulevard.

Zeb Arruda, the Deputy Commissioner for New Bedford's Department of Public Infrastructure, says a 12-inch water pipe on Holly Street burst around 4:30 p.m.

Arruda says foremen were sent to the area and water was shut off at around 5:00 p.m.

The shutoff affected residents between Dean Street and Coggeshall Street on Ashley Boulevard, and residents between Acushnet Avenue and Brook Street on Holly Street.

Excavations began around 8:00 p.m., repairs were then made, and service was restored around 3:00 a.m.

Arruda says the burst was caused by the old age of the pipe.
