NOAA's Woods Hole Fisheries Science Center will remain on Cape Cod and not relocate to New Bedford.

That's the word from agency spokeswoman Teri Frady, who says because of current needs and partnerships, any new facility will be located in Barnstable County.

New Bedford had made a strong push for the center.

Mayor Jon Mitchell and fifty community leaders recently sent a letter to NOAA, inviting the Science Center to the city and suggested by coming here, NOAA would go along way toward repairing the damaged relationship between fishermen and the regulatory agency.

New Bedford is the largest fishing port, dollar-wise, in the nation.
