In a story that is touching hearts around the world, a beautiful newborn baby was left abandoned in a crèche of a nativity scene at Holy Child Jesus Church in Richmond Hill, Queens. The infant boy, who still had his umbilical cord attached, was found after faint cries were heard by the church custodian around noon on November 24. The church is considered a safe haven for distressed mothers. Surveillance video from the church shows a woman walking inside with the baby in her arms and then shows her leaving without the hours old baby. Families within the parish have lined up inquiring to adopt the infant. Rev. Christopher Heanue said members of the church community feel that the baby was left in the parish and should stay in the Holy Child Jesus parish. The child was taken to Jamaica Hospital and is doing well.

In the New Bedford area, all churches, St. Luke's Hospital and all police stations are considered "safe havens" for baby drop-offs.
