South Coast female veterans now have a memorial to call their own.

The Military Women's Memorial was unveiled Saturday afternoon at Fort Taber to honor all female veterans that have served in our armed forces.

Keynote speaker and member of the memorial committee First Lieutenant Kathleen Splinter spoke about the importance of women on and off the battlefield.

Dozens of veterans were in attendance for the ceremony at the Fort Taber Community Center.

Local politicians took time to reflect on the great strides women have made in the service and the sacrifices they made while serving on the home front.

The memorial project began in 2006 and after donations from all over the country, the $34,500 monument is on displayed next to the Veteran's Museum.
