Lasers could one day be used to prevent root canals.  Harvard researchers are already getting some intriguing results by using lasers on the teeth of mice and rats.

The laser beams apparently trigger stem cell development that helps form new dentin, the layer below the enamel.

Experts are quick to point out that the laser research is still quite preliminary, and the process of regenerating a tooth in humans is still a long way off.
