Senator Robert Menendez is being indicted on federal corruption charges. The New Jersey Democrat is a former chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He has aggressively denied allegations related to his relationship with a wealthy supporter from Florida. A multiple count indictment was handed down by a grand jury in Newark. The 61-year old Menendez has been in the Senate since 2006.

The charges stem from his relationship with Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen. The Senator calls Melgen a friend and says he never used his position to help him.

Menendez has in the past denied any wrong doing and plans to make a statement later in Newark today. Menendez plans to address to charges in a press conference this evening. (Metro Networks Inc.)
