New Bedford's new state-of-the-art elementary school for the South End won't be ready when the new school year begins on August 31.

In a letter dated July 31, New Bedford Schools Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin informs parents and students that the new Irwin Jacobs Elementary School will not be opened in time for the upcoming school year.

It was originally slated to open in September, but the letter says construction delays have pushed back the building's opening to Monday, November 27.

In the meantime, students and teachers will temporarily be placed in the former William H. Taylor Elementary School, located four blocks south of the new Jacobs School.

Durkin says she has been informed that there will be no further delays past the November 27th date.
