A New Bedford woman pleads guilty to stealing over $60,000 in Social Security benefits.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz's office says 49-year-old Lynn Medeiros applied for SSI disability benefits in 2005 for her son, who was living with her at the time. Medeiros was to notify Social Security if her son left her custody or his living conditions changed.

In August of 2007, Medeiros' son had left her custody, yet Medeiros continued to collect benefits on his behalf until 2013, falsely reporting to Social Security stating her son was still living with her and that she was spending the money on his behalf. Over that time, Medeiros had received $63,798 in benefits which she used for herself.

Medeiros pleaded guilty Friday in U.S. District Court. She will be sentenced on April 13.
