NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) — An 86-year-old woman was killed when her car was struck by another car on a Massachusetts highway.

State police say the collision happened at about 3:15 p.m. Friday on Route 140 in New Bedford.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 27-year-old New Bedford woman was traveling north on the highway when her vehicle struck the vehicle being driven by New Bedford resident Barbara May Pivo. Pivo's car subsequently spun out and struck the median guardrail.

Pivo was taken to a nearby hospital before being flown by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
