Local officials and community members gathered at Fort Tabor in New Bedford Saturday afternoon to mark Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day.

The nationally recognized day serves to give Vietnam Vets around the country the thanks they didn't get, some 40 years ago.

The last U. S. combat troops left Vietnam on March 29, 1973.  The event was hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 499.
