Crews from the City of New Bedford planted a tree Friday at North Sixth Street and Mechanics Lane, the first of what Mayor Jon Mitchell says will be hundreds of trees planted over the next few years.

City crews have already planted a number of new trees Downtown. Mitchell says the crews will take the process to the major roadways and neighborhoods.

Also, the city is planting fruit trees on Sunday from 10-to-1 at Brooklawn Park. Officials say its a volunteer effort and the public is invited to join in.
