With historical structures and beloved monuments, the downtown New Bedford area is seen as a playground for vandals. At least one City Councillor wants to make sure the city is keeping an eye on some of it's most precious assets.

Councillor at Large Deborah Coelho is proposing the City install surveillance cameras near City Hall, the Post Office, the bus station, and the Main Library, to deter people from defacing public property.

Coelho says with the recent defacement of the 100-year-old "Whaleman Statue", she thinks it's time to install greater security measures in that area.

The council will review the motion in a study committee.
