A three-story home in New Bedford sustained an estimated $20,000 in damage following a fire Tuesday night.

District Fire Chief Jeff Pothier says the fire at 194 Belleville Ave was reported at around 11 p.m.

Five companies responded to the scene and upon arrival encountered heavy smoke from the one room fire which extended to the outside of the building.

Pothier says the fire was knocked down by 11:43 p.m. and the scene was cleared by 12:39 a.m.

The building was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported.

Damage was confined to one floor.

The incident is under investigation by the New Bedford Fire Prevention Bureau.
