New Bedford Teen Arrested For Shooting

An arrest has been made in connection with the August 2 murder of 24-year-old Jeffrey Sylvia Jr. of New Bedford.

Gregg Miliote, a spokesman with the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, said that State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney's Office and New Bedford Police detectives arrested 17-year-old Darian Cardoza Thursday night at his home at 191 County St.

Police were notified, through the city's Shot Spotter gun shot detection system, of shots being fired near the intersection of Acushnet Avenue and Blackmer Street around 1:37 a.m. on August 2.

Upon arrival first responders found Sylvia lying in the street and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Miliote says Cardoza will be arraigned Friday morning in New Bedford District Court on charges of murder, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
