A New Bedford based solar energy company has been ordered to pay $125,000 in restitution and penalties for violating the state's prevailing wage law.

Attorney General Maura Healey says Carvallo-Carvallo, Inc., doing business as Beaumont Solar Company must pay $83.000 in restitution, plus $42,500 in penalties, for work related to installation of solar panels on schools in New Bedford, Melrose and Newton.

The A-G's investigation revealed that the company had improperly classified workers, resulting in 18 workers being paid less than the prevailing wage.  The probe also revealed that the company hindered the investigation by attempting to obtain false statements from workers.  The investigation began following a complaint filed in 2013 by the National Electrical Contractors Association.

The owner of Beaumont Solar, Philip Carvallo, denied the firm did anything wrong, and told the Standard Times, he planned to appeal.
