BOSTON — On Monday, Senate Rules Committee Chairman and Assistant Majority Leader Mark C. Montigny (D-New Bedford) announced that New Bedford Public Schools will receive $90,000 to support early literacy programs in local public schools.

The Early Grades Literacy grant program is funded each year by the legislature to improve early literacy achievement for students throughout Massachusetts. As part of this year’s Early Literacy grant program, the Devalles, Pacheco, and Hathaway Elementary Schools in New Bedford will receive $30,000 each.

The funding will help teachers from each school participate in professional development courses throughout the year and provide onsite coaching and support from early literacy specialists. New Bedford is set to receive over 10% of the total funding provided throughout the entire Commonwealth.

“Sadly, not every child is afforded an equal playing field, particularly when it comes to education. However, we are committed to heavily investing in their future so that they may succeed.” said Senator Montigny. “This grant will deliver much-needed resources to provide our hardworking teachers with the tools they need to help our children thrive.”
