At Wednesday night's New Bedford School Committee budget meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pia Durkin asked for 4.6 million dollars more than what the state says the city has to spend. Dr. Durkin told the committee she's requesting 118.7 million dollars. Last year the district got 109 million dollars. Included in this year's budget is a one time 1.9 million dollar request for new elementary level reading books. school officials says that the majority of the elementary schools are currently using 11 year old books.
