Residents held vigil in New Bedford Monday, to mark the beginning of National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Monday's ceremonies, organized by The Women's Center, saw the lighting of a tree next to City Hall, which will be illuminated for the month to remember victims of domestic abuse. Wareham resident Kelly Sylvia says the event carries special meaning for her, and spoke about her experience as an abuse victim.

The month will conclude with the annual Women's Center candlelight vigil on October 23rd at the First Unitarian Church on Union Street, to memorialize local domestic violence victims.
