The City of New Bedford is receiving $1.5 million from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says the funding will be going to programs that help the homeless in New Bedford.

"It's an ongoing challenge and a very complex one but I'm just very pleased with the hard work that all of our partners contribute in combatIng what is a very difficult problem," said Mitchell.

The Mayor said the money will be distributed to six programs that provide services to the homeless.

The biggest chunk of money, nearly $578,000, is going to Catholic Social Services for its Portico program which provides housing for homeless families. The program has 46 scattered sites throughout the city.

The Mayor also praised the city's Homeless Service Providers Network for coming together on behalf of the city's homeless population.
