Edward Anthes-Washburn, the director of the Port of New Bedford, has been named chairman of a national committee on maritime economic development.

The committee is part of the American Association of Port Authorities that serves as a unified voice for the seaport industry, and represents more than 130 public port authorities in the Americans, promoting their common interests.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says having Anthes-Washburn chairing the committee "is a recognition of the national significance of New Bedford's port and Ed's work in helping develop it to its full potential."

Anthes-Washburn says he is "honored to represent New Bedford on a national level."
