New Bedford Police Warn of Bank Scam Through Social Media
NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Police are warning the public about a scam that is targeting banking customers through social media.
Targets of the scam are contacted through Snapchat and are offered money in exchange for opening a bank account. Customers are then asked to provide their ATM card and PIN number, which the scammers then use to deposit fictitious checks and access money from the victims’ account. The victims’ credit information, bank account and criminal record may then be compromised.
Police and bank officials remind the public not to provide personal banking information to unknown individuals.
Anyone with any questions about offers should immediately cancel the communication and contact their local bank and the police. New Bedford Police can be reached at (508) 991-6350.
