A man is in custody after New Bedford Police say he was caught breaking into a home.

Detective Captain Steven Vicente says that officers were sent to area of Union St. and Lincoln St. around 7:30 a.m. Sunday over a report of a house break in progress.

The second floor tenant told police they heard noises on the first floor and knew that the person living in the apartment was at work.

Officers observed a broken window in the back of the house and saw someone moving inside the first floor unit.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident after they had attempted to flee.

Vicente says officers found a television and other electronics that he was preparing to steal stacked up inside the home.

The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Thomas Hurd of New Bedford, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in New Bedford District Court on charges of Breaking and Entering in the daytime and Larceny in a Building.
