A New Bedford Police officer helps deliver a baby on New Year's Day. Police say Officer Nathan Monteiro, an 11-year veteran of the force, was dispatched to the 400 block of Bolton Street in the South End at about 3:30 Tuesday morning, to a report of a woman going into labor.

Once Officer Monteiro was in the apartment, he found a 21-year-old woman in the bathroom giving birth. Monteiro immediately rendered assistance and helped deliver the baby girl.

At the time of birth, the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. Monteiro was able to loosen the cord and clear the baby's airway. The infant came to life and began to cry.

Both the mother and the newborn girl were transported to St. Luke's Hospital where they are reported to be doing fine.
